Winter is coming: the rules of Serbian traffic regulations in the winter season, which you need to know about

October is the perfect time to think about preparing your car for winter. Serbia has clear rules that can result in fines. Keep the memo in order not to get an unpleasant surprise from saobraćajna policija (traffic police).

1️⃣ Winter tires (Zimske gume)
From November 1 to April 1, your car must be "shod" in winter or all-season tires on all four wheels if there is snow, ice, ice on the road or the air temperature drops below 4 degrees. In other words, the operation of cars with summer tires is allowed, provided that the surface is dry, there is no snow and ice. However, on long trips, the weather and road conditions can change quickly, so we strongly recommend that you change your car shoes for winter
Important: the minimum allowable tread depth is 4 mm.

2️⃣ Snow chains (Lanci za sneg)
During the same period (from 1.11 to 1.04), the chains must necessarily be in the trunk when leaving the settlements. They should only be worn on the driving wheels in areas where the appropriate blue sign is installed and the road is covered with snow (for example, when traveling to Kopaonik or Tara). An important caveat is that studded tires are prohibited in Serbia.

3️⃣ All - season tires
Tires marked M+S (Mud + Snow) are considered winter tires according to local regulations and are allowed to be used. However, for frequent trips to mountainous regions, we recommend using a full-fledged "winter".

4️⃣ Fines for violations (Kazne)
The police strictly enforce the rules, and fines can seriously hit your wallet.:
-For individuals — from 10,000 to 20,000 dinars (about 85-170 euros) for using a car with summer tires in winter conditions.
-If due to summer tires you provoke an accident in winter conditions, the punishment will be much stricter: a fine of up to 40,000 dinars, penalty points and even the risk of arrest for up to 45 days.
-The absence of chains in the trunk when leaving the city is also fined — about 3,000 dinars.

By the way, many of the cars that we bring to our customers from Europe (especially from Germany and Switzerland) often run on good all-season tires at once. This is a great bonus that saves you from 300-500 euros at the start!
